Pupils Weekend Meeting Point Chemistry

This year's students' weekend at the chemical institutes on January 25 and 26, 2020 gave more than forty students insights into research and studies. In addition to information sessions on studying in Clausthal, laboratory practicals could be carried out at all institutes. The working group "Materials Analysis and Functional Solids" offered experiments from the bachelor's program in chemistry.

After a short welcome and introduction to the topic by Prof. Dr. Fittschen, the students were able to work practically in the laboratory. The task was to investigate the calcium content in a mineral water sample. Complexometric titration and instrumental determination with atomic absorption spectrometry (see photo) were available for this purpose. In a short final discussion, both methods could then be compared with each other. In addition to the methods mentioned, test strips could be used to determine the total water hardness. These test strips were handed out to the students for self-experimentation so that what they had previously learned could be applied at home.
