Master and PhD students of the AG Fittschen participated in the excursion to the Hygiene Institute of the Ruhr Area on October 05 and 06, 2021. The Clausthal group was welcomed by the director of the institute Dr. Seiler. During the tour, which lasted several hours, the excursion participants got to know different areas of the institute. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to demonstrate sample preparation and measurement of asbestos fibers. Another interesting insight was also given in the field of limnology. The toxicity of pollutants in water or aqueous media on biological systems was explained by several examples. Here the behavior of zebrafish, the use of daphnia for daphnia tests, as well as the growth of green algae were observed, and the backgrounds were questioned.
Besides biological tests, a practical exercise for mass spectrometry was performed during the stay. The sample preparation of 1,4-butanediol in an aqueous solution had to be performed. The subsequent measurement and evaluation of a UPLC-ESI-MS system were dealt with in
